So, Instagram just quietly dropped something that could seriously shift how we create content: a new standalone video editing app called Edits.
Yes, another app. But hear me out – I think this one’s different.
At its core, Edits feels like Meta’s way of saying, "We see you hustling on CapCut… but what if we made it easier?"
It’s built for those of us who know short-form video is here to stay – but seriously don’t have hours to spend inside complicated editing software.
In short? Edits offers pro-level video features – think layers, audio syncing and speed controls – wrapped in an interface that doesn’t make you want to throw your phone across the room.
Here’s why that matters:
1. It’s FREE.
Most of the good video editors come with a price tag.
Final Cut Pro? A cool US$300, upfront.
Premiere Pro? A subscription that runs about US$270 annually.
Even "free" apps like CapCut tuck basic tools (video stabilisation, anyone?) behind a paywall.
Edits levels the playing field by giving everyone access without hidden fees.
2. Polished video is no longer gatekept
Whether you’re filming tips in your bedroom (hi, I see you 👋🏽) or building a full-on brand empire, Edits seems like it’s trying to hand you creative control without the fancy gear or software.
3. Built for Reels from the jump
No more messing with tricky export settings to avoid Instagram’s compression monster. Edits is baked into the ecosystem – what you create is instantly optimised for IG. No weird cropping. No blur. Just ready to post.
4. Less fuss. More done.
The app is surprisingly intuitive. You can overlay clips, adjust speed, trim, add transitions – all in one place. Which means fewer apps, fewer steps, and honestly? Fewer excuses to avoid posting that video that’s been sitting in drafts for weeks.
I played around with it this week and edited a quick clip for my mom’s baking business. Sharing a little time-lapse below so you can see how painless the process was. Check it out!
I’ve been a loyal CapCut girlie, but lately, I’ve been side-eyeing their ever-growing paywall (why is fade to black suddenly premium?). Edits feels like Meta’s answer for all of us looking to break free.
I don’t know whether it’s because I haven’t used it much but it does feel a touch too simple, but if they keep building based on user feedback, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become the go-to tool for Reels creators.
Testing it out yet? Would love to hear your first impressions! I’ll be tinkering more over the next couple of weeks – and maaaybe actually filming some content (big emphasis on maybe).
Love from your Chronically Online Friend,
Sydney ✨💖
P.S. Want a no-BS, side-by-side of Edits vs. CapCut? I’m thinking about putting one together. Hit reply and let me know if that’s something you’d use.
